We Remember

"Up, up the long delirious burning blue; I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace.

Where never lark, or even eagle flew; And while with silent, lifting mind I've trod

The high, untrespassed sanctity of space; Put out my hand, and touched the face of God."

JOHN GILLESPIE MAGEE JR. '40, FROM THE POEM "HIGH FLIGHT"

Man of Avon: Barton G. Barrett '65

BARRETT, Barton Haxall Grundy, a retired realtor, Marine Corps veteran, talented tennis player, and inveterate ladies man, departed this life on July 2, 2017, at the age of 71, after fighting a long battle with Alzheimer's. He attended St. Christopher's School and was a graduate of Avon Old Farms in Connecticut and the University of Arizona. Barton was a well-known and highly-regarded realtor for 40 years, who took great joy in finding the right home for his clients. He loved tennis matches and boating parties with friends at the family cottage on the Piankatank. Always a Virginia gentleman, he enjoyed world travel and animals, including BR, Rhoda, and his various girlfriends' dogs. He was an active member of the Country Club of Virginia and the Commonwealth Club. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest Clifford Barrett Jr. and Barbara Haxall Grundy Barrett; and his brother, Ernest Clifford "Ford" Barrett III. He is survived by his sister, Blair B. Curdts (Billy); and five adoring nieces and nephews, Palmer Barrett Curdts, Sophie Pegram Curdts Mohrmann (Drew), Peyton Fleming Curdts, Blair Haxall Barrett and Hugh Comer Barrett (Nicole). The family would especially like to acknowledge the excellent care given by Tony Fogg and Joyce Williams; their love and affection for Barton was evident. Barton will be missed by his family and many friends. A memorial service will be held at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 7, 2017. Those wishing to honor B2 may contribute to St. Christopher's School, 711 St. Christopher's Road, Richmond, Va. 23226; the Maymont Foundation, 1700 Hampton Street, Richmond, Va. 23220; or the Richmond SPCA, 2519 Hermitage Road, Richmond, Va. 23220.
