The Winged Grapplers barely edged out the always-tough and well-coached Bruins from Brunswick this afternoon. As our first dual meet of the season, we looked a bit rough and have lots to work on, but showed enough mettle to hang on to a narrow victory.
Action started at 220 lbs with new-comer Finn Sullivan. After three rounds of tough fighting, he lost to his opponent, but gained valuable match experience.
Egan Kennedy brought the team some momentum with his victory at 285 lbs. Joey Creen at 106 earned the team six valuable points by forfeit and Alex Arnheiter came up big at 113 lbs by only giving up 3 points to his seasoned opponent.
Janos Lobb and captain Vince DeBlasio (120 and 126 lbs respectively) both came out on top. Ben Sherbacow had a tough go at 132 lbs but also gained some valuable mat experience. Brendan Gillis had a great match at 138 lbs, but came up a bit short at the end of the 6 mintues. Seamus O'Brien got caught at 145 lbs but will be back for sure.
Mike Zhai lost a tough one at 152 lbs, but Kyle Klett came back at 160 lbs with a big win. Tyler Langmeier was strong at 170 earning the team a well-needed six points. Carmine Magnoli's performance at 182 lbs shook the room and added enough points to ensure the team's victory.
The final match of the day was at 195 where veteran Alex Banfield lost his match after dominating his opponent for the majority of the six minutes.
Overall, a very good day and positive start to the season ahead. The sportsmanship was outstanding from both teams and the support we received from the parents, friends and AOF students and faculty certainly played a role in today's victory. Thanks to all who came out in support and we invite you to another very exciting day of wrestling this Saturday as we compete in the annual Loomis Holiday Duals.
