Ski Program Overview
The Avon Old Farms Ski Program is committed to the ideal of encouraging a lifelong love of the sport and competition. Our focus is turning our team members into strong skiers first and developing racing techniques second while also placing a heavy emphasis on having fun and enjoying the sport. The attributes of a Ski Team member are commitment, diligence, thoughtfulness, athleticism, and the ability to function as a member of a team. The program has established a tradition of turning out strong skiers in recent years.
Ski Program fields two teams (Varsity and Junior Varsity) each winter who train together. Our season begins in late November with a “dry-land” training program designed to improve our racers conditioning and prepare them for the season. We begin training on snow usually in early January (weather permitting). We train four days a week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday) at Ski Sundown in New Hartford, CT. There are three coaches who work with all of the skiers in the program. Our team competes in both Slalom and Giant Slalom events.
The Varsity team is currently a member of the Berkshire Ski League and the majority of its races are against league opponents. The other members of the BSL include Berkshire School, Ethel Walker School, Kingswood Oxford School, Loomis Chaffee School, Miss Porter’s School, Salisbury School, Suffield Academy, Taft School, and Trinity-Pawling School. The Varsity team also competes in the Class A NEPSAC Alpine Skiing Championships. Our races are held on Wednesday afternoons in January and February.
Avon also offers a recreational skiing and snowboarding program for those students who snorboard or those who ski but do not want to race.
