Head Coach: Henry Coons ’71
Henry R. Coons is a 1971 graduate of Avon Old Farms School. He received his BA from Muhlenberg College in 1975, and master's degree in history from Trinity College in 1984.
He was captain of the football and baseball teams at Avon, and he lettered in football and baseball at Muhlenberg College. Coach Coons has had a strong interest in and passion for tennis dating back to his teenage years growing up in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. There, he had a unique opportunity to see a very young Chris Evert develop her skills under the direction of her father Jim Evert at Holiday Park and Coral Ridge Country Club.
During his summers in high school and college, Coach Coons instructed tennis at Camp Mowglis in Hebron, New Hampshire and later at the Quogue Racket Club in West Hampton Beach, Long Island.
Coons returned to his alma mater to teach history and coach football, basketball, and tennis at Avon Old Farms in 1976. In 1981 he was hired as the Head Teaching Professional and Manager of the Hartford Tennis Club where he taught tennis to hundreds of children and adults for eighteen summers
He has won numerous singles club championships in several clubs and still plays both singles and doubles during the summer months.
Now in his 30th year as head coach of the Avon varsity tennis team, Coons has over 225 victories along with a co-Founder's League Championship in 2003 and several appearances in the Division I Prep School Championships.
His biggest thrill as a tennis coach is to see his players work hard in practice, improve their skills, and practice good sportsmanship.
