As the Green Monster lurked in the background, the Avon varsity hockey team challenged the Taft School in the first, outdoor hockey game ever played at historic Fenway Park. This once-in-a-lifetime exhibition game provided players, coaches, and fans with unforgettable memories, including a ceremonial, opening face-off with the puck dropped by legendary, Boston Bruins forward Cam Neely. The weeks between Thanksgiving and the holiday break continue to be a very special time at Avon as the school community always eagerly anticipates the enduring traditions of the holiday season. Avon held the 27th annual, Toys for Tots campaign led by Warden Matt Coz ’10 and the Student Council. The money raised was used to buy hundreds of holiday gifts and clothes for less fortunate families in Hartford. Avon also marked this special season with two Holiday Concerts featuring our highly talented vocal and instrumental musicians, Christmas Vespers, and the usual pageantry of the Boar’s Head Festival. The festivities culminated with the 27th Christmas Hockey Classic, which included a reception for Avon alumni, parents, and friends. » Click here for a gallery of holiday photos...

Earlier this year, an Entrepreneur Club was organized on campus and received tremendous interest, especially from the Senior class. The group has since evolved into an all-encompassing, career-services, mentorship, and entrepreneurial organization where the boys will experience real-world scenarios and learn how to foster and implement their creative ideas. The networking and connections that abound in the Avon Old Farms community certainly give our students The Avon Edge, an appropriate choice for the new name of the club.
Recently, the boys attended a panel discussion at Yale University to listen to venture capitalists, as well as two young entrepreneurs. Thanks to Gilman Callsen ’04 who is also a Yale graduate, Avon was the only outside group invited to attend this prestigious event sponsored by Y.E.S. (Yale Entrepreneurial Society) and the Yale School of Management. The Avon students impressed their gracious hosts with a flurry of ideas, unique perspectives, and the maturity they displayed. Later this year, members will have the opportunity to experience “a day in the life” at several organizations in Boston and New York City, including Fidelity Investments, Goldman Sachs, NBC Universal, and others. Readers are encouraged to contact Dan Seiden ’00 (seidend@avonoldfarms.com or 860-404-4265), faculty advisor to the club, with any suggestions, assistance, or connections you may have that would be helpful to The Avon Edge members. |

Anthony N. Springer ’10This year, free time doesn’t really exist for Anthony Springer, but he wouldn’t have it any other way. The Hartford, Connecticut native is currently Corresponding Secretary, a three-sport, varsity athlete, and president of the Social Activities Club and the Diversity Club, to name just a few of the hats he wears on campus. He is also a caring community servant and an active co-president of Avon Outreach, the school’s umbrella organization for community service. Anthony credits the Toys for Tots fundraising campaign as the inspiration for his community service activity, remembering a little girl who stood on stage, among all the gifts, reading a heart-felt thank you to the community during his freshman year. He recalls feeling the desire and the obligation to give back to the local community from that point forward. Given all of his involvement on campus, it is hard to imagine that Anthony thought he wouldn’t fit in at Avon when he first arrived as a freshman. Now, four years later, it is hard to imagine the community without Anthony Springer – a Man of Avon who is an exceptional role model for all of us. |
