John Gardner is the Provost of the school. His job is to run the daily operations of the school pertaining to the students and faculty. He is also the varsity hockey coach and is in his 38th season behind the bench.
John grew up in the northwest corner of Connecticut as his father was a teacher at the Salisbury School for many years. He graduated from Salisbury School and Wesleyan University before coming to teach, coach, and advise the students at Avon Old Farms in 1975. He has had many roles at Avon during his tenure at the school, serving as a teacher of mathematics, director of athletics, and coaching football, hockey, and baseball. He has been the Provost since 1998. His hockey teams have been very successful, winning eight New England Championships and producing many collegiate and professional players. He is also the President of the New England Prep Hockey Coaches Association.
John lives on the school campus with his wife, Miriam, and has two grown daughters, Lisa and Jennifer.
