Financial Aid
Financing an Avon Education
Avon Old Farms recognizes that many parents must plan carefully and make sacrifices to meet a full year's expense. The School is committed to working with families to clarify the financial aid process and explain financing options, such as payment plans. For the 2012-2013 school year, 35% of Avon Old Farms students receive over $4 million in financial aid grants. While it is the goal of the Financial Aid Committee to help as many families as possible, each year the number of applications for financial aid is greater than the number of available awards and we cannot guarantee funding to all of the applicants that qualify. Therefore, families should strive to meet all application deadlines in order to maximize the opportunity to be considered for a financial aid grant. Please note that students applying for financial aid may be in a more competitive situation for admission to Avon Old Farms.
Families enrolling their sons at Avon Old Farms should also be aware that it is unlikely they will be considered for financial aid in future years if they do not apply for financial aid upon the initial application to the School, or are unable to clearly demonstrate a significant, unexpected change in their financial picture.
School Expenses for 2012 - 2013
Boarding tuition $48,500
Day tuition $36,700
Fees (approximate) $ 2,800
Financial Aid Program
Financial aid at Avon Old Farms is determined by a family's ability to meet educational expenses. It is our expectation that your son’s Avon Old Farms education will be among your highest priorities when it comes to your family’s discretionary expenses. Requests for financial aid should be made known to the Admissions Office at the time of application and/or interview. It is not possible for the Financial Aid Committee to consider requests for financial assistance after admission decisions are made. Any questions concerning qualifications for financial aid may be addressed to the Director of Financial Aid, Geoff Barlow '98, at 860-404-4245 or barlowg@avonoldfarms.com.
All financial information submitted in support of a financial aid application is held in strict confidence. All financial aid awards are confidential agreements between the recipient family and Avon Old Farms School. Therefore, it is the expectation that students receiving financial aid, and their families, will honor this confidentiality. A student may forfeit his award if this confidentiality is breached.
How to Apply for Financial Aid
1. Starting on November 1, 2012, you may begin your financial aid application by completing your Parents' Financial Statement (PFS) at http://sss.nais.org. Answer all questions as completely as possible and be certain to list Avon Old Farms School (Code # 1450) as a recipient of the Report of Financial Need. We recommend completing the PFS online; however, you may contact the Admissions Office to request a printed version of the PFS.
2. In addition to submitting your PFS, the Financial Aid Committee also requires signed copies of the following documents be submitted to SSS no later than February 1st:
- 2011 IRS Form 1040 (signed, with all applicable schedules)
- 2012 IRS Form W-2
- 2012 IRS Form 1040 (signed, with all applicable schedules)
- SSS Business/Farm Statement (if applicable)
These forms should be mailed to:
SSS by NAIS
P.O. Box 449
Randolph, MA 02368
Due to the timing of our deadline, we will temporarily accept an estimated 2012 tax return. Copies of the signed and completed 2012 Form 1040 should be mailed as soon as possible. Our initial financial aid award could change based on differences between your estimated and actual 2012 tax return. No financial aid award is final until the official 2012 tax return is received.
3. In cases of divorced or separated parents, it is the policy of Avon Old Farms School that both parents retain the obligation to contribute to the education of their children whether or not there is a legal agreement between them to do so. Both natural parents, including their spouses if they are remarried, should provide the financial information that is requested by the School each year.
4. For new applicants to Avon Old Farms, all forms should be submitted to SSS no later than February 1st. Financial aid awards are then mailed on March 10th with admission decision letters. For returning Avon students, the forms should be submitted no later than February 1st if your application is to be given full consideration. If this date has passed, please send the completed forms to SSS as soon as possible.
Renewal of a Financial Aid Award
Financial aid decisions are made on an annual basis, and we ask that families reapply for aid each year. The Financial Aid Committee then reevaluates student grants. Grant amounts may vary, depending on changes in the parents' financial situation. It is the responsibility of the financial aid recipient to maintain appropriate grades, effort, and conduct.
Payment Plans
Payment plans are also available to divide the tuition cost over 9 months. Please contact Lisa Maraia in Avon's business office for more information about payment plans. She can be contacted at 860-404-4229 or maraial@avonoldfarms.com.
