Football - Thirds vs. Rectory School
Event Type: Regular
Advantage:Home
Date: October 1, 2011
Result:Loss
Score:12-18
Event Recap:
The first game of October was a hard-fought contest between Avon’s 3rds Football and the Varsity team of Rectory School.  Unfortunately, Avon lost 18-12.

Avon won the coin toss to start the game and elected to defer their choice to the second half, but things quickly turned sour.  Rectory returned the opening kick for a touchdown and led 6-0 before 15 seconds has elapsed.

Avon then received the ball and started advancing down the field.  Unfortunately, the pigskin proved to be slippery.  The ball was lost on a fumble and Rectory recovered.  Following the recovery, Rectory struck quickly again, ripping a huge gain for another TD.  At the end of the first quarter Rectory led 12-0.

In the 2nd quarter, the men of Avon began to rally.  Having spent the entire first quarter on their heels, now the Winged Beavers came to life.  Marching down the field decisively, the Avonians scored after a 15 yards burst by Collin Rissolo, narrowing the gap to 12-6.

Rectory answered with another long gain that led to a TD and pulled ahead 18-6.  Avon anwered with another long and relentless advance down the field and scored on a 5-yard run by Derek Kasperzyk.  This brought the score to 18-12 at the end of the first half.

The second half was a battle, with neither side giving an inch.  Tremdous defensive plays were made by both teams.  Rob Root had his second fumble recovery in as many games and a couple of key tackles for losses.  P.J. Ryan contributed two QB sacks.  Kevin McLaughlin and Austin Liptrot made key stops and Henry Schopp made an impact in his first game at Defensive End.

Avon seemed to be gaining momentum as time was running out, but Rectory rallied to stop them with some tough defense.  It was a hotly-contested and well-played game by both teams.  Though Avon came up on the short end of the score, they vow to work hard and get ready for their next opponent. We face Suffield Academy on Wednesday, 12 Oct at home.  Hope to see all our fans there.
