Event Recap: AVON 1, HOTCHKISS 2 Avon stayed close to perennial powerhouse Hotchkiss in a thrilling 90-minute battle that featured the disciplined execution of game plans by both sides. Our back line stood tall all day and on a couple of occasions had to pile bodies in the goal mouth to keep the game close but did so with poise and determination. We moved the ball well through the midfield and created a number of high-quality scoring opportunities off of combinations up top. The difference in the scoring line was two moments of defensive indecision on our part and a second Avon goal waived off by the referees in the waning moments of the game. Outstanding performances were turned in by the entire back line of AJ Johnson, Lane Valimont, and Leo Lehto with help from Matt Ruhlig, Sam Ravich, and Max Romm. Johan Venema played his finest game in his three-year career in the middle of the field, slowing counters, man marking, and providing offensive spark. Ben Davis and Elliot Howe also contributed mightily on both sides of the ball, and up top, Javier Ortiz de Zarate and Pap Diouf created a number of combinations that gave us chances to tie or even take the lead in the game. Pap Diouf scored the lone Avon goal on a header and would have had credit for the second Avon goal had it not been waived-off. All in all, we could not have been more proud of our boys. They left it all on the field today, some playing through injuries. This performance should give us some real confidence in our system and in our ability. We bent but we did not break and we brought some pressure to bear on a high-quality opponent.
Next up is Deerfield at home on Saturday with a 3:30 start.
