Advantage:Home
Date: October 22, 2011
Result:Loss
Score:5-6
Event Recap:

The Fifths soccer squad came up short today in a very close and exciting match against Westminster’s Fourths team.  Westy got off to a 2-0 lead in the first 20 minutes of the game, but Avon battled back to take the lead 3-2 by halftime. Avon’s first goal was scored in the 23rd minute when left forward Duke Brown-Jones headed in a lofty cross from right forward Jackie Chen. Avon’s second goal was scored in the 28th minute by Duke Brown-Jones as well; Jackie Chen passed the ball to center forward Anton Zock, who found Duke inside the 18 for a close shot. Avon’s third goal was scored seconds before the half by forward Reid White. He managed to break away from the defense, place a hard, low shot directly at the keeper, who had a hard time holding on; 3-2 Avon at the half.

Both teams came out of the half all fired up, but Westy was the first to score. Minutes later, Avon caught Westy off-guard and a beautiful offensive drive developed. Stopper Sam Corman made a quick throw-in down the line to Duke Brown-Jones, who drew in 4 defenders moments before crossing the ball to the center of the field; Anton Zock was on the receiving end for a one-touch, line-drive shot on goal. Avon back up 4-3 and full of momentum.  Two minutes later, Duke Brown-Jones managed to break free near the 18 for a quick shot—which deflected off the keeper—but he scored off of his own rebound to secure the hat-trick and put Avon up 5-3.

Unfortunately, Westy made a strong push to reclaim the lead by the end of the game; in the last 20 minutes of play, Westy scored 3 goals off crosses that found the back-post, weak-side striker crashing the goal for the finish. Although Avon fell short 5-6 today, it was a great team effort, and the squad demonstrated significant improvement since the last time we played Westy earlier in the season.

Some noteworthy performances on the defensive end were fullbacks Dan Paul, Jake Rochford, and Jiwoo Suh; together with sweeper Ryan Messinger, these guys were working hard in the backfield to prevent Westy’s bigger and aggressive forwards from getting easy shots on goal.

Avon’s next scheduled game is away at K-O on Wednesday; thanks for the support!
