Man of Avon: Huntley G. Davenport '56

DAVENPORT, Huntley Gibson, 80, a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on April, 3, 2018. He was preceded in death by his parents, Roswell Burrows Davenport and Jane Gibson Davenport; and his brother, John Sidney Davenport IV. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jean Hill Davenport; his daughter, Marguerite Davenport Nicholls and her husband, Brian; his son, Huntley Gibson Davenport Jr. and his wife, Mary; and his daughter, Jane Hill Davenport. He is also survived by his sister, Elizabeth Davenport Wright and her husband, Buster; and his sisters-in law, Barbara Humphries Davenport and Judith Hill Lawes; eight beloved grandchildren, Rebecca Nicholls Louick, Elizabeth Gray Walker, Brian Georgeson Nicholls Jr., Catherine Blair Nicholls, Huntley Gibson Davenport III, Sophia McIntire Davenport, Olivia Davenport Plageman and Susanna de Sales Plageman; three great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Davenport attended Westhampton School in Richmond, Virginia, where he got off to a tough start and was expelled at the age of six. From that point on, Huntley was determined to succeed in school and life. He ultimately finished salutatorian at Avon Old Farms and earned a scholarship to Yale University. Following graduation, he proudly served his country in the United States Army, where he was stationed in Fort Campbell, Ky. Mr. Davenport enjoyed a distinguished 50-year career with Wells Fargo Advisors, formerly Wheat First Securities, where he founded Wheat Investment Advisors, ran the Capital Markets division and started the Southeastern Growth Fund, the first mutual fund in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Huntley served on many boards including the Boys and Girls Club of Virginia and Saint Christopher's School. He was President of the Country Club of Virginia and always CEO of his entire extended family. He had many interests and a strong passion for golf, travel and the game of bridge. He was fortunate to have played many renowned courses around the world and was a rules official for the USGA for over 15 years. His love of golf inspired him to become a founding member of Ocean Forest, Kinloch and Independence Golf Clubs. However, nothing gave Huntley greater pleasure than taking friends to play "Arthur Crump's gem" in Pine Valley, N.J. Although Huntley was looking forward to many more bridge victories at CCV, he felt like it was important to join his brother in Heaven this Masters weekend. Private family interment followed by a memorial service at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, April 6, at Grace and Holy Trinity Church.
