A native of Melbourne, Australia, Josh brings a wealth of experience and an impressive squash background to the Avon Old Farms Squash program. Josh is extremely passionate about promoting the sport he loves by introducing players to the game, coaching players of all abilities and standards, and providing programs that will help keep the sport of squash social, fun and active for all ages.

As a player, Josh achieved a career-high ranking inside the top 150 in the world - an impressive accomplishment in its own right, but even more so considering that Josh did not begin playing the sport until age 19. Turning professional at age 22, Josh travelled and competed in more than 80 tournaments across 30 countries, before eventually settling into full time coaching in 2012. Coach Cardwell comes from a strong squash legacy as his mother is the former women’s world #1 and world champion, and his younger sister is currently competing professionally and for her native Australia.

During the winter sporting season, Coach Cardwell heads the varsity squash program at Avon Old Farms School. In only his second season with the school, Coach Cardwell and the Avon Old Farms Winged Beavers were crowned champions at the largest participated squash tournament in the world, the US Squash High School National Team Championships.

The Avon Old Farms Squash Club is situated inside the Gaynor Squash Pavilion at Avon Old Farms School, Connecticut. Opened in 2007, the facility boasts six world-class international singles squash courts, and one three-wall glass exhibition court. Combined with ample seating and viewing, Gaynor Squash Pavilion is the perfect place to house top-tier tournaments and world class squash training, or simply to slap around a squash ball on a Sunday afternoon in comfort.

No matter your age or ability, squash lessons are available from our head professional throughout the week.
We offer 45-minute and 60-minute lessons, 7 days a week.
