College Counseling Updates 10.8

Virtual Family Week

College Counseling will be offering 3 simultaneous Zoom meetings on Thursday, October 15th from 3:30-4:15, one for each of the sophomore, junior and senior classes.  These meetings will cover application timelines and the current college admission landscape.

Class of 2020

  • Be sure to update Scoir with the colleges you are interested in. For schools to which you know you will be applying, be sure to move the school from “Following” to “Applying” in your Scoir account and notify your counselor.
  • Continue to work on completing the Common Application. If you have questions, refer to our Common Application Instructions and Essay Writing Tips.
  • Please see the College Virtual Visits Calendar located on the College Counseling page (scroll down) of the AOF website for a listing of virtual college visits. These meetings are for students only. The rules for attending are as follows:
    • Seniors and PGs may miss class but not a quiz, test, or lab.
    • Please notify your college counselor of your intention to attend so we can communicate with the representative.
    • Juniors are encouraged to attend during a free period. They may not miss class.
  • Counselors will continue to meet with students to discuss their admission plans and any changes to their college lists.

Testing

Although the majority of colleges have waived requirements for applicants to submit standardized testing results (SAT or ACT) for this admission cycle, we understand that many students want the option to take them if their test scores might bolster their applications, if athletic recruiting will require them, or if they will help in applying for merit scholarships.

Following are the test options we are recommending. These tests will be administered at AOF and include both weekend and class day options.

*Wednesday, Oct. 14             SAT School Day (12/PG)

Saturday, Nov. 7                   *CANCELLED*

Unfortunately, we have had to cancel this test administration.

Class of 2021

We will assign your son his college counselor in December and start our individual meetings in January.

Testing

Although the pandemic has disrupted testing policies, we understand that many students want the option to take standardized tests if their scores might bolster their applications, if athletic recruiting will require them, or if they will help in applying for merit scholarships. Since we will not be in session for the dates we usually recommend 11th graders take the test in December, 11th grade students should plan to take the ACT on October 24 and the SAT at home in December in order to learn which test platform reflects their abilities better and to establish a testing baseline. This information will be important to help us develop a testing plan for each student when the outlines of the next admission cycle become clearer and we begin individual conferences in January. Students who want to sit for the December administration should register to take the test at a center near them. We plan to offer Class Day SAT administration and the ACT in the spring as well.

Wednesday, Oct. 14         PSAT class day

Saturday, Nov. 7              *CANCELLED*

Unfortunately, we have had to cancel this test administration.

FAQ

Does my son have to register to take the PSAT?
No, we arrange to have tests for all 10th and 11th grade students.

My son is repeating the 11th grade and has already taken the PSAT twice. Does he have to take it again?
Students who are repeating the 11th grade and who do not wish to take it again can opt to take the School Day SAT on the same date. Please note: students will be taking one or the other test. Contact Claudine Meaney in the College Counseling Office (meaneyc@avonoldfarms.com) to arrange to take the School Day SAT.
