College Counseling Updates March 5

Class of 2021

Application Decisions

Regular Decision application results are forthcoming; students should continue to check their emails and college portals. Application results are important to us, so please remind your son to share his application decisions with his counselor.  For those students who have been deferred or waitlisted, continue to communicate with the admissions representatives to provide updated information and express your continued interest.

Remember to complete the FAFSA if you will be seeking financial assistance.

Scholarships

The following websites provide useful information for students interested in researching and applying for scholarships:

Class of 2022

College counselors have begun meeting with students to discuss course choices and to have an initial conversation about colleges. Please check your son’s Scoir account to see the preliminary list that he and his counselor developed. We sent a registration invitation email back in November, but If you are having difficulty logging in to Scoir (www.scoir.com), please contact Suzanne Hayes, hayess@avonoldfarms.com to resolve any issues.

Testing Registration

ACT:

Avon Old Farms School will be a closed ACT test site (AOF students only) on:

April 17th, 2021—registration deadline date March 12th.

Your son will  need to create an account and register at ACT.org. Because we are not a national test center and will be testing only the AOF students, your son must indicate a test center number (212250) in order to be recognized as a student at our school.

SAT:

The SAT will be offered to Avon Old Farms School students during a class day on:

Tuesday, April 27, 2021—registration deadline date March 10th.

Register for the SAT through the Google Form emailed to your son or contact the Avon Old Farms testing coordinator, Marie Delnicki at delnickim@avonoldfarms.com.

Other Testing News

1. The College Board is discontinuing SAT Subject Tests.

The College Board will no longer offer the SAT Subject Tests in the U.S. Students in the U.S. will automatically have their registrations canceled and receive a refund. Because SAT Subject Tests are used internationally for a wider variety of purposes, we'll provide two more administrations in May and June of 2021 for students in international locations.

2. The College Board is discontinuing the optional SAT Essay.

This decision recognizes that there are other ways for students to demonstrate their mastery of essay writing. At the same time, writing remains essential to college readiness, and the SAT will continue to measure writing and editing skills. The tasks on the SAT Reading and Writing and Language tests are among the most effective and predictive parts of the SAT.

College Counseling Webinar Series

The Hartford Area Independent Secondary School College Counseling Association (HAISSCCA) will continue its “Deans and Directors” webinar series on Monday night starting in April. We will be sending invitations later in March.
