9/10 College Counseling Office Updates

Class of 2022

Please see the College Representative Visits Calendar located in SCOIR. These meetings are for students only. The rules for attending are as follows:

  • Seniors and PGs may miss class but not a quiz, test, or lab.
  • Please notify your college counselor of your intention to attend so we can communicate with the representative.
  • Juniors are encouraged to attend during a free period. They may not miss class.

Counselors will be meeting with students over the coming weeks to discuss their admission plans and any changes to their college lists.

Testing

Although the majority of colleges have waived requirements for applicants to submit standardized testing results (SAT or ACT) for this admission cycle, we understand that many students want the option to take them if their test scores might bolster their applications, if athletic recruiting will require them, or if they will help in applying for merit scholarships. 

Following are the test options we are recommending. These tests will be administered at AOF and include both weekend and class day options.

  • October 2: SAT  Late registrations are being accepted through September 21st.
  • Oct. 23: ACT Your son will need to register with his account by September 20th with late registration accepted through October 4th. This test will be administered at AOF.  
  • November 6: SAT Your son will need to register by October 8th with late registrations being accepted through October 26th. 
  • December 11: ACT Your son will need to register with his account by November 5th with late registration accepted through November 19. This test will be administered at AOF.

Understanding the context of testing for the 2021-2022 application cycle:

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted our traditional college application cycle, and our office continues to track the changes colleges have made to the process in response. Currently, the vast majority of four-year colleges in the US will be “test-optional” for 2021-2022 applicants. The policies vary widely, from colleges who “strongly encourage but do not require” students to submit scores to colleges who will not use scores at all in their evaluation of applicants for admission. In the most prevalent plans, choosing to submit or not to submit scores will neither advantage nor disadvantage the applicant. Students have the option of submitting test scores if they feel they will bolster their applications, and those who choose not to submit scores will have their applications receive full consideration. However, it is important to read the information that the college publishes on its website regarding standardized testing. If you have questions, please contact your son’s college counselor.

Class of 2023

  • We will assign your son his college counselor in December and start our individual meetings in January.

Testing

Although the pandemic has disrupted testing policies, we understand that many students want the option to take standardized tests if their scores might bolster their applications, if athletic recruiting will require them, or if they will help in applying for merit scholarships. 

We have already registered all of the 11th grade will take the PSAT on Wed, October 13. 

We also recommend that 11th graders take the test in December. 11th grade students should plan to take the ACT on December 11 and the SAT on December 4 in order to learn which test platform reflects their abilities better and to establish a testing baseline. Please see the instructions on how to register for each test here. This information will be important to help us develop a testing plan for each student when the outlines of the next admission cycle become clearer and we begin individual conferences in January.
