October 9, 2019
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
I'm writing to communicate details about two events occurring during Family Weekend on October 18-19. First, I'm extending an invitation for you and your family to attend The Investiture of James M. Detora P'12 as the seventh headmaster of Avon Old Farms School. Second, I'm asking for your feedback to ensure we address topics-of-interest in the "What's New at Avon" program.
Headmaster Investiture
The Investiture of Headmaster James M. Detora P'12 will take place on the Village Green on Saturday, October 19, at 11:15 a.m.
We are anticipating upwards of 1,000 guests on our campus. I've encouraged all of the students to communicate with their families and plan to attend this celebration with you prior to leaving for a much-deserved long weekend. We would be honored to have you celebrate this momentous occasion with our community.
Historically, the investiture of a headmaster at Avon Old Farms School is a rare event, occurring only twice in the previous 50 years. George Trautman was officially recognized as the fifth headmaster in 1969, starting this 50 year window. To put this length of time in perspective, this is the year that the Apollo 11 mission landed on the moon and the famous words "that's one small step for man, and one giant leap for mankind" were echoed by Neil Armstrong and also the countercultural movement of the Woodstock Music Festival occurred.
In 1998, Kenneth LaRocque was recognized as the sixth headmaster of Avon Old Farms School and led the school through the millennium—continuing our strong traditions and sense of community. Needless to say, an investiture of a headmaster is a rare and significant event that is truly a monumental occasion for our school.
"What's New at Avon" Request for Questions
In addition, the senior administrative team is leading a program titled "What's New At Avon" on Friday, October 18. This program will focus on new initiatives such as Prep4ward, Social Institute, the revised student life program, and SchoolSuite.
We are offering the opportunity for families to ask specific questions in advance to ensure we are commenting on areas of school life that are important to each of you. Please email me at whittyr@avonoldfarms.com with your questions so we can provide the answers in the program.
We look forward to a Family Weekend filled with connection, celebration, and communication.
