January 7, 2021
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Like many of you, watching American citizens storm the Capitol yesterday during what should have been a peaceful debate regarding our nation's democracy shook me to my core. It is hard to believe our nation has become so deeply divided, and January 6 will forever be known as a dark day in history.
Ten months ago today, Avon had just begun spring break, and we were hosting the New England semi-final hockey game against Salisbury. From there, we have been confronted with a global pandemic that upended our lives, protests around the nation to address systemic racism, and now a heartbreaking attack to disrupt our democratic process. I cannot think of a more tumultuous time in my 52 years on this earth.
While processing the events last night, I must admit that my typical optimism wavered. But I began to draw strength from our community, our mission, and our values. I reflected on my responsibility to Avon Old Farms School, to our community, and to our students and alumni. I felt a renewed sense of purpose. The work we are doing is more important than ever during a time like no other. Producing good men of strong moral character, empathetic leaders, and responsible, resilient citizens is at the heart of the Avon experience.
Undoubtedly, our students will look to us for guidance and support as they process these events over the coming weeks. Avon will rise to this challenge, listen to their concerns and opinions, and encourage healthy discussions in a supportive environment. The stress of the ongoing pandemic along with the current political climate is real but also provides an opportunity for conversation, growth, and resilience. Please know we have many avenues of support and we will encourage our students to use them.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me or Associate Head of School Rob Whitty. We look forward to welcoming your sons back to campus next week and truly appreciate the unique responsibility of being their home away from home.
Aspirando et perseverando, Jim Detora P'12 Head of School
