MATHEMATICS AT AVON

ACQUIRING THE confidence to approach complex problems strategically

Courses in the mathematics department range from fundamental algebra through Advanced Placement calculus and statistics to post-AP linear algebra, differential equations, and multivariable calculus.

Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are essential at every level of mathematics, and faculty instruct with lessons that emphasize student activity and collaboration. Students gain the confidence to approach complex problems strategically and graduate prepared to be successful in the continued study of mathematics at the college or university level.

Unique Experiences

Online Program

Math courses are a significant part of the online program, and many students take advantage of the opportunity to further their study online in order to advance in the math curriculum during the academic year. Avon’s online courses are taught by AOF faculty.

Post-AP Course of Study

The math curriculum extends beyond the Advanced Placement program to offer courses in Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, and Multivariable Calculus on a rotational basis. In this way, talented math students are able to challenge themselves with topics of study that are typically featured at the collegiate level.

Math Enrichment Hour

Enrichment hour offers a great opportunity for math students to work through additional math problems with each other and with the teacher. The extra repetitions do help. A math student might also use enrichment hour to review an old assessment with his teacher to better understand any mistakes or to refine his approach to studying the material for future assessments. In this way, a student might see enrichment hour as a chance to extend the conversation about his studies beyond the classroom.
