Captain's Corner: Golf

This spring, our golfers showed up when it mattered most, saving their best golf for the biggest tournaments. We talked with captain Grady Millisor '26 to hear his reflections about his final season.

How many years have you been playing golf at Avon?

“I started playing when I was super young—like 5 years old. I played every summer. I started taking it more seriously my sophomore year. That's when I joined the golf team here and I really embraced the grind of getting better. So I've been at Avon four years, and on the varsity golf team for three.”

Why do you think you were appointed captain?

“I think there's a couple reasons. I've been on the team the longest, so I know the courses the best and was one of the leaders on the team last year. Since I've been on the team as a younger guy, I know how to be a role model for the younger guys this year. I was able to show them the ways. I also know all the guys on the team really well, which is important for team chemistry. ”

What does the role of golf captain entail?

“It's mostly just being the mental coach for the whole team. Golf is a mental sport. I remind the guys that your own individual score doesn't matter as much as the overall team score, so you just have to remain calm, confident, and play your game.”

What do you think makes a good leader?

“Someone who doesn't take all the credit for themselves. A leader represents somethine bigger than themselves. You have to be vocal, confident, and have everyone's respect. It's also important to remember that you're not the only leader. You have to listen to what others think.”

How has the season gone?

“We got off to a really good start. We lost some matchups against good teams, but we played our best golf in the tournaments. We went into Western New Englands, which is the biggest tournament of the season, with pretty much no expectations, and we ended up winning the whole thing. That was the highlight of my Avon career.”

What are your goals for the team next season?

“My main hope is that they have good leadership again from next year's seniors. It'd be awesome to see them win another tournament. Also, everyone got along really well this year. We had great team chemistry, so it was fun going to practice every day. I hope it's the same for next year's team.”
