The Bigelow Learning Center

Academic Coaching at its Best

The David C. Bigelow '44 Learning Center at Avon Old Farms serves all students (with and without learning differences) as they work to achieve their academic goals, learn essential study skills, and meet the demands of a college preparatory school curriculum. Established in 2010 by the Bigelow Family and the Bigelow Tea company with an open-door policy and dedicated staff on site, the Learning Center is a comfortable space for students to get work done, and maybe get a little help along the way.

Our proven methodology—along with the solid relationships formed between students and staff—results in boys who gain an understanding of their own unique learning styles. Equipped with a new confidence and the right tools, these students are empowered to become independent, lifelong learners. Our team of nurturing educators can help students better manage their time, learn organizational strategies, procure excellent study habits, take better notes, access available campus resources, and more.

“As parents of three Avon Old Farms boys we have seen the significant role the Bigelow Learning Center has played in our sons’ academic successes at Avon Old Farms and on into their college years. The Bigelow Learning Center provides an environment where small classroom sizes get even smaller. The boys learn to feel comfortable with who they are as students and confident when asking for help, knowing they have a place and teachers to turn to for guidance."

Enrichment Hour

Modeled after office hours at the college or university level, Enrichment Hour is dedicated time on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings, from 6:45-7:45, when teachers are available to their students for extra help. Students may use Enrichment Hour for assistance with an assignment, review class discussions, brainstorm ideas, revise writing projects, or get help studying for an assessment.

Avon’s schedule demands that you be organized with your time, but it also provides every opportunity to get help and guidance along the way,” explained Leo Johnson ’20. “Enrichment Hour with my teachers has been very helpful in keeping my GPA high, and when I spoke about my grades and my work ethic in the classroom with prospective colleges, that proactive approach impressed coaches. It’s all about taking advantage of the opportunities your school provides.
