As always, our varsity soccer team has high pre-season aspirations. We sat down with captain Hunter Collins '27 to find out how he and his teammates are preparing. 

How many years have you been playing soccer? How many years at Avon?

“Ever since I could walk. Even before I was old enough to play in an organized league, I had an older sister who played, so I would run around playing too. Around 12 years old is when I started taking it more seriously. I was always competitive, but that's when I joined a travel team and started playing more. I came to Avon my sophomore year and have been on the varsity team for three years, primarily playing left back.”

Why do you think you were appointed captain?

“I was one of the leaders on the team last year. Every captain is different, but I'm a very vocal leader which helps a lot during games to keep the energy up or keep things organized.”

What does the role of soccer captain entail?

“We had some preseason meetings with coach to discuss how we would approach certain games, and I'll have meetings with him throughout the season to share my perspective on how things are going. We also lead the warmup lines and make sure there's a good environment in the locker room. It also entails being a second coach on the field during games. I try to keep everyone level-headed but also hyped up.”

What do you think makes a good leader?

“Someone who does the right things on and off the field. Someone the younger kids can look up to and aspire to be. If someone is out of line or messes up, a good leader talks to them about it rather than just yelling at them.” 

Do you have any goals for this season?

“The team goal is to win our league and play as far into November as we can, but really we take things game-by-game, practice-by-practice in order to get there. Personally, I'd just like to be the best captain I can be on and off the field.”

Is there one game in particular you are looking forward to this season?

“Probably Choate. They knocked us out last year, so getting our revenge and showing how we've grown from that loss is something I'm looking forward to.”

The varsity soccer team's first home game is this Saturday, Sept. 19, at 2 p.m. against Roxbury Latin School. A full season schedule and livestream information are available on the athletics section of our school website.
