Hockey Program Overview
The Avon Old Farms Hockey Program has earned a reputation for excellence throughout the years. As the premier prep school hockey program in New England, it has demonstrated the consistent ability to produce winning teams and develop successful collegiate players as well as some outstanding professional athletes.
Premier Prep School Hockey in Connecticut
There are four levels of hockey teams at Avon: Varsity, Varsity B, Junior Varsity, and Futures teams all practice daily and have a full schedule of competitive games. As the list of Avon distinguished alumni continues to grow, what they have achieved is unsurpassed. Nine New England Division I championships and nine Founder’s League championships in the last twenty-five years is far and away the standard that other schools strive to reach. Playing in the Founder’s League against competitive schools such as Choate, Kent, Hotchkiss, Loomis-Chaffee, Taft, Trinity-Pawling, and Westminster, and playing a twenty-five game schedule (not including post-season), is a catalyst for each player’s development.
State-of-the-Art Facilities
All practices and home games take place at Jennings-Fairchild Rink which is a well-maintained and newly-renovated facility. Brand new large locker rooms, training rooms, and physical therapy areas serve the teams well. There is a video room for teams and coaches to use to evaluate and improve their performance. A state-of-the-art weight and fitness center is used to maintain and gain strength and flexibility during the season as well as during the off-season. The student body embraces the sport of ice hockey and all games are well-attended events that help to make the atmosphere at Jennings-Fairchild rink special.
Notable Avon Hockey Alumni
The list of Alumni of Avon Old Farms Hockey is an outstanding one. Heading the list is NHL Hall of Famer, Brian Leetch ’86 and LA Kings goalie, Jonathan Quick '05. Nick Bonino '07 has won two Stanley Cups with the Pittsburgh Penquins and his former teammate, Cam Atkinson '08 is an NHL All-Star and the Columbus Blue Jackets all-time leading scorer. Olympians and NHL players David Roberts ‘89, Matt Martin ’90 and Jon Quick ’05 have represented the USA in Olympic play and several other Avonians have played, or are currently playing in the NHL.
