CAPTAINS CORNER: CATCHING UP WITH VARSITY SOCCER
With the fall athletics season in full swing, we sat down with varsity soccer co-captain Marco Bannon ’25 to find out what he and his teammates are looking forward to this year.
- How many years have you played varsity soccer?
“I’ve been on the varsity team for the last two years — been a student at Avon for three years.”
- What has been your favorite memory from your time on the soccer team?
“It’s just the small stuff. I mean, winning is great, but the stuff I’ll really remember is like riding the bus together, team meals, stuff like that. Before every Wednesday game we have lunch together in the Refectory, and before every Saturday game we do a team dinner at someone’s house Friday night. Those are great.”
- What does your role as captain entail?
“The biggest thing I’ve been emphasizing is making sure everyone is involved and is comfortable and confident. Wherever you’re at in your soccer journey skill-wise — just starting out or one of the best players on the team — there’s a place for you. I didn’t make the varsity team my first year here, so I understand from experience the impact that hard work and a positive attitude can have. I try to encourage everyone in everything we do.” - Does the team have any goals for this season?
“Obviously, every year the goal is to win the Founders League and compete at New England’s. This year, I feel good about those goals. We have a good squad, we just need to make the right decisions in the right moments, and stay positive.”
- Are there any games you are looking forward to in particular this season?
“We’re looking forward to a few games, but I think the main one would be Loomis. For Avon as a whole, they’re a pretty big rival, and last year they came here to play us at home and beat us pretty bad, so I’m definitely looking forward to having another shot at them.”
