CAPTAIN'S CORNER: CROSS COUNTRY

The cross country team is off to a great start this year, with huge wins over Taft, Choate, Berkshire, and Suffield Academy, among others. In fact, the team has already beaten Hotchkiss twice this season, having only beaten them on two other occasions over the last 30 years. This week, we sat down with team captain Will Agnes '27 to find out more about his role.
- How long have you been a member of the cross country team?
“This is my fourth year at Avon and third doing cross country. Although i've been running track since middle school. In track I run the mile and half mile. Of all the distances, the mile is my jam and jelly. This is my first year as captain of the cross country team."
- Why do you think you were elected a captain?
“A good portion of it has to do just with being a senior, but there's definitely more to it. I always try to talk to everyone, which means I really get to know the whole team. I also always try to go beyond what's expected of us.”
- What does the role of cross country captain entail?
“I lead the team in our warm up routine before practice or meets. I also lead our core workouts and stretches. I organize the set up for home mets, which can be a process. And during the races I encourage the rest of my teammates and offer support no matter how their race went.”
- What makes a good leader?
“I think getting on other people's levels, finding ways to relate to them instead of just being a dictator. You wouldn't want to make someone do something that you don't want to do. Ultimately, I think what makes a good leader is the ability to make change that makes people happy.”
- How has the season gone so far?
“It's gone great. We've had a top-10 runner and finished with a top-10 team placement every meet. We're improving every week, too, both in our times and in team morale. We look ready to peak at the perfect time—during the Founders meet.”

This year, the Founders League Championship meet will be held at Avon Old Farms on Saturday, November 1, beginning at 3:30 p.m. Show up and cheer on our runners as they look to be the first Founders League champions in school history!
