OLD FARMS ROAD PROJECT UPDATE
In the Spring 2023 edition of the Avonian, we shared news that the Town of Avon would be commencing with a project to improve the safety and condition of Old Farms Road, the road that winds through the school’s property and contains all entrances to the school.
Anyone that has driven this section of Old Farms Road in the last decade has likely noticed that the road has become a much busier passage with hundreds, if not thousands, of cars traveling each day. Unfortunately, with increased volume comes increased rates of accidents, which subsequently puts our students, faculty, staff, and greater community at greater risk.
The project was initially approved via a town referendum vote in December of 2022. Since then, progress can be seen in the form of cleared vegetation and heard in the form of rumbling construction equipment.
During the first week in January 2024, the town began “Phase II” of the project with a public input and information session held at the Avon Free Public Library. The engineering consulting firm of Wengell, McDonnell & Costello (WMC) presented a preliminary plan from the town that features a widening of the road by two feet on either side which would increase the visibility and maneuverability of the road and allow for the addition of a shoulder/bike lane that would connect the Farmington Heritage Trail and Fisher Meadows.
This was an opportunity for residents to ask questions about the project and share their concerns with WMC developers and town engineers. Residents at the meeting expressed various concerns which included the possibility of a speed increase on the road and that the project would force the removal of too many trees in the area. |

Input from residents and AOF community members can still be provided by contacting the town engineering department at 860-409-4322. WMC hopes to have a finalized plan to present in April.
More information and continued updates on this project can be found on the town’s website.
