The Woodwell Leadership Award: An Opportunity for Sophomore Leaders

The Woodwell Leadership Award is designed to challenge and inspire one current sophomore who is committed to personal growth and meaningful service to the Avon Old Farms community. Rooted in the belief that leadership is forged through experience, reflection, and responsibility, this award recognizes a student who is ready to push beyond their comfort zone and return with sharpened skills and a deeper sense of purpose.
What the Award Provides
The selected student will attend an Outward Bound program of their choice, at any available location. The award covers full registration and program fees, allowing the recipient to fully immerse themselves in the experience without financial barriers. Please note that personal travel expenses to and from the program are not included.
Outward Bound programs are known for developing resilience, confidence, teamwork, and ethical leadership—qualities that align closely with Avon Old Farms’ mission and values.
How to Apply
To be considered for the Woodwell Leadership Award, students must submit an essay by February 10. Essays should thoughtfully address the following three areas:
- Current Leadership: Your personal perspective on how you currently lead, both in and out of the classroom.
- Growth Potential: How an immersive outdoor experience like Outward Bound will help evolve your leadership skills.
- Community Impact: How your personal development will directly and positively benefit the Avon Old Farms community.
Essays should be reflective, authentic, and specific, giving insight into both who you are now and the leader you aspire to become.
A Note to Parents
Parents of current sophomores: this opportunity was shared with students during a class meeting prior to the holiday break. We encourage you to talk with your son and urge him to apply. The Woodwell Leadership Award is a rare and transformative experience—one that can shape a student’s growth at Avon and beyond.
The deadline is February 10. We look forward to learning more about the thoughtful, driven leaders.
