2024 Fall Sports Recap
Our campus burst into life one late-August morning as students participating in varsity fall sports arrived for preseason camp. The energy was palpable as cars began filling Dio Circle, full of new and returning Avonians ready for another school year. That energy remained a constant throughout the highs and lows of the fall athletics season.
When the final varsity rosters were announced, our cross country team only contained one runner whose primary sport was cross country. And yet, our boys proved over the course of the season that they could still compete with anyone.
The team put in several strong performances early on the season including a dominant win over Westminster. They also placed second out of five teams competing at the Gordon Glover Invitational meet.
Co-captains Logan Glass ’25 and Peter Mok ’25 showed exceptional leadership throughout the season. They put up impressive individual performances as well, with Mok finishing in the top 15 at the Founders League Championship meet. This earned him All-Founders League honors. “That was a personal goal of mine,” Mok shares. “A lot of the newer guys improved a lot over the season too. That's a good sign for next year.”
It's true that the future is bright for this team. Underclassmen Andrew Chou ’27, Will Agnes ’26, Teddy Hoffman ’27, Michael Mounsey ’26, Cam Thomas ’27, and Xiran “Felix” Fan ’27 all finished within the top 50 of all runners in the Founders League, and can all boast sub-20-minute 5k times.
Our varsity soccer team this season proved just how elite the competition is in the Founders League and throughout New England. Despite an impressive final season record of 11 wins, 6 losses, and one draw, the team was not selected for post-season tournament action.
There were still plenty of positives to take away from the season. Over half of the team’s wins came with shutouts, proving the team’s defending and goaltending were strong. Team MVP Jacob Humienny ’25 solidified his place in Avon’s legacy of athletic excellence with 14 goals and seven assists. “Since I’ve been here, no one has scored as many goals. As a midfielder, it’s even more impressive,” Head Coach Carl Stensland shares.
Jacob was named All-State, All-Founders League, and All-NEPSAC for his stellar season. Team striker Derek Yeboah ’26 was also named All-State and All-Founders League and earned an All-NEPSAC honorable mention.
As usual, the Winged Beavers were a force to be reckoned with on the gridiron. They began the season with back-to-back blowout wins against Kent and Loomis Chaffee. Later in the season they won three games in a row by a combined score of 104-21. Their final regular season record was 6-2, which qualified them for the Drew Gamere Bowl game.
The team and some very dedicated members of the Avon Army made the long trip up to Phillips Exeter Academy for the game, but ultimately Avon fell just short of hoisting the trophy. However, the team did earn plenty of individual awards. Rayshon Andrews ’25 was named the Founders League Defensive Player of the Year. He also was named to the Defensive First Team All-Founders League alongside teammates Duncan McPherson ’25, Deacon Prince ’25, Owen Moreland ’25, and Dante Recker ’25. On the offensive side of things, linemen Wyatt Scarritt ’25 and Owen Aliciene ’25, tight end Brian Hnat ’25, and wide receiver Rafferty McSweeney ’25 were all named First Team All-Founders.
With several underclassmen earning second-team or honorable mention awards, and the JV football team finishing their season undefeated, there is a lot to look forward to for next season.
There was also a new addition to the Avon Old Farms Athletic Hall of Fame this fall. On October 26, World Series MVP George Springer ’08 returned to campus for his induction ceremony where he reflected on the impact that his time at Avon had on his development into the player and person he is today. More photos from that ceremony are available on our website.
With the last of the warm weather well behind us, it’s now time for our winter sport athletes to shine. This includes the annual Christmas Hockey Classic, which will take place from December 19th through the 21st. Please visit our website for ticketing and/or livestream information.
