Captain's Corner: Robotics

Our robotics students spent this season working as a team, showcasing sportsmanship, and competing against other schools around the region. We sat down with team programmer Zachary Thompson '26 to find out how their season went.
How many years have you been involved in robotics at Avon?
“I've been with the team for about a year and a half. I've been with the team off and on starting in the fall of my sophomore year. I actually wasn't involved in any robotics programs until I got to Avon.”
What was your role within the team?
“I was the main programmer. I did almost all the coding so that our robots would perform the tasks we wanted them to.”
How did the season go?
“We didn't end up going past the qualifiers, but we did win a few of our matches. We had a lot of younger guys get their first experience which is great for the team going forward.”
As a senior on the team, what lessons did you learn about leadership?
“I learned that if I stayed on task the others would follow my example.”
What was the biggest challenge this season?
“The biggest challenge for me was the code for the drive train required lots of tweaking. Whenever we changed the motors or when we swapped from two wheel drive to 4-wheel-drive, I had to do a lot of reconfiguring to get the robot ready to go.”
What are your hopes for the team next year?
“I hope that next season the team is able to make it through the qualifiers. I would also love to see them win at least one of the awards at the end of the competition.”
