2026 Spring Sports Recap

The spring sports season is the shortest of the year, but our athletes made the most with their time, upholding our standards of both sportsmanship and excellence on the field, court, course, and track.
Long-standing school records were not safe this year when our track and field athletes competed. Early in the season, Lathan Ajegba ’27 tied the school high jump record before going on to break it with a height of 6’ 6”. With a distance of 44’ 10.75,” Myles Carter ’27 broke the school record in the triple jump set by Mickoy Nichol ’14 more than a decade ago. Finally, Jaiden Roach ’27 set a new record in the 400m with a time of 49.59.
The individual accomplishments didn’t stop there. Ajegba, Carter, Thomas Stockwell ’26, Luke Schupp ’28, Will Agnes ’26, August Alexander ’27, Weston Hicks ’27, Jordan Lee ’26, Ben Callahan ’26, and Dylan Wafle ’27 all earned All-Founders League honors. Roach, Ajegba, Carter, Wafle, Lee, and Alexander achieved All-NEPSAC status.

Collectively, the track and field team proved to be one of the best in Founders League and all of New England. The team showed this at their final meet of the year, placing in the top five at the NEPSAC Championships.
The varsity golf team finished with an impressive 32-12 final record this year. They saw plenty of highs and lows this season, but they saved their best golf for the biggest moments. The team placed in the top five at every tournament they participated in this year, including a second place at the coveted Coppola Cup.
The highlight of the season was the team’s performance at the Western New England Championship Tournament. Our boys took home the trophy in a dramatic tiebreaker over Brunswick. "It’s the biggest tournament of the season. We went in with pretty much no expectations, and we ended up winning the whole thing. That was the highlight of my Avon career,” shared team captain Grady Millisor '26.

Although the team said goodbye to several seniors after the season, some of the best performers on the team will be returning next year to continue the golf team’s tradition of success.
While some teams simply continued their trend of success, our varsity lacrosse squad set a new and improved standard this year. They played some of the toughest competition in the country and held their own in every game, coming away with big wins against nationally ranked teams like Loomis Chaffee and Belmont Hill.
The team played so well, in fact, that they went undefeated in Founders League play, earning the #1 seed going into the postseason tournament and making it clear that Avon Old Farms are once again the Founders team to beat.

In only his first year at the helm, new Head Coach Taylor Pirie was named the New England West 1 Coach of the Year. We can't wait to see how he and his team continue to build on this success in future seasons.
The varsity tennis team started the season off strong, winning 28 of their first 35 matchups. They kept this intensity up throughout the season, shutting out their opponents on six separate occasions.
With a final record of 9-5, the team just missed out on playoff qualification. Team captain Liam Boone ’26 explained that his main hope for the season was for all his teammates to continue to improve. “I want every player to find their strength and learn how to use it, but I also want them to be honest with themselves to identify their weaknesses so that in practice we can work on those things to be all-around better players.”

This year, the team participated in a new exhibition tournament event. The inaugural Farmington River Classic Mixed Doubles Tournament saw Winged Beavers pair up with a student from Miss Porter’s School in what both teams hope will become a new tradition.
Our varsity baseball team were ranked #2 in the NEPSAC preseason coaches poll. The team initially struggled to live up to these preseason expectations, with their overall record dipping below .500 at multiple points during the season. “Our guys never pointed the finger at someone else or let their heads drop,” Head Coach Rob Dowling ’91 said.
The team was 10-10 with two games to go, but that’s when the perseverance of Winged Beavers turned into a rally as the team won their final two regular season games by a combined score of 30-0 and qualified for the postseason tournament. Two upsets later, and the team were hoisting their 35th Founders League Championship trophy.

While there are likely several more individual accolades to come, it was announced earlier in the season that Coach Dowling was awarded the M.D. Nadal Sportsmanship Award by the Founders League, which is given to the coach whose conduct exemplifies the proclamation "play by the rules, accept victory or defeat graciously, respect all who assemble and participate." A well-deserved award for a true Man of Avon!
Just like that, the spring season at Avon—along with the 2025-26 school year—has come to an end. We know our athletes will continue to compete during the summer before returning in the fall for another year of athletic and academic excellence.
