Tennis is one of the most tightly-contested sports in the realm of New England Prep School athletics. Just one match can make a difference in the fight for playoff qualification. Our varsity team have already proven they can compete with anyone. We talked with captain Liam Boone '26 about his expectations for the season.

How many years have you been playing tennis at Avon?

“I started at around 9-years-old. My mom was sick of me running around the house, so she signed me up for tennis and I ended up liking it. My second or third year playing I started to get more serious about it. I've been on the varsity tennis team all four years at Avon. My first year I didn't play many competitive matches, but as a sophomore year I started working my way up the ladder. My junior year and now this year I'm the number one for singles and doubles.”

Why do you think you were appointed captain?

“It comes down to a team vote. I think a lot of it was just because of how long I've been on the team. Charlie Carruth is the other captain and he's also been on the team a long time. We're also both solid players so we can be an example if needed.”

What does the role of tennis captain entail?

“I lead warmups during practices and in matches I'll announce the lineups. Sometimes coach will have me help the JV team during their practices.”

What do you think makes a good leader?

“Someone who understands the people they're leading and puts others before themselves. If you get to know people better you can help them more effectively.”

How has the season started?

“We had a 2-0 start, both 7-0 victories, so it's been pretty good. Besides matches, practices are going well. Everybody wants to improve. I think our greatest strength is our ability to train all together while each focusing on our own individual needs.”

What are your goals for the rest of the season?

“I want every player to find their strength and learn how to use it, but I also want them to be honest with themselves to identify their weaknesses so tht in practice we can work on those things to be all-around better players.”
