CAPTAIN'S CORNER: SQUASH

Hailing from Ecuador, Pablo Paredes '26 chose Avon Old Farms as the next step in his squash career, and has spent the last two seasons as captain of the varsity team. We sat down with Pablo to learn more about his role and what his hopes are for the season.
- Can you tell us a little about your squash background?
“I've been playing for more than 10 years now, but got very serious about it around 2021. My older brother taught me early on, and we played with my dad a lot growing up. At 10-years-old, I started playing in national competitions. It's a very popular sport in Ecuador."
- How long have you been a member of the squash team at Avon?
“After playing in the South American Championships, my coach told me I should look for schools in America further my career. Many people recommended Avon Old Farms. I enrolled my junior year and have been the #1 on the ladder and one of the captains both years."
- Why do you think you were elected a captain?
“My teammates chose me I think because I am always trying to help the other guys. Every practice, I'm working with them to improve their level. I think I'm like a big brother for them in squash.”
- What does the role of squash captain entail?
“I read out the ladder at the start of every match, saying which guys will be playing in which matches. I also conclude any pre-match motivational talks. In practice, I'll lead the stretches. I also help coach with social media and other communication for the team.”
- What makes a good leader?
“For me, good leadership is looking out for your teammates before yourself. And if they are struggling with anything, it's important to be there for them."
- Do you have any goals for the season? Team or personal.
“I think we started better than last season so far. We have some guys that were on JV last year that have started pretty well. The team goal is to continue to improve and hopefully win our division at New Englands. For me personally, I want to increase my Universal Squash Rating (USR) to at least a 6.0. I'm currently at a 5.1, with the highest possible rating being 7.0."
- What has been the highlight of your squash career at Avon?
"The New England tournament last year. It's a three-day tournament, so you're with your teammates a lot, staying in a hotel together and everything. It was a lot of fun. I did pretty well, but I'm trying to do better this year."

The varsity squash team has a packed weekend coming up. They first play at home on Friday at 4:30 p.m. against Hopkins, followed by an away match against Pomfret on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
